String Chamber Orchestra

The String Chamber Orchestra is the primary performance ensemble for string players at UMN Morris. Open to all students, regardless of major or level of music and experience, the orchestra rehearses once a week and performs throughout the academic year in concerts on campus, in the community, and on tour. The ensemble performs a diverse repertoire for both strings only and full orchestra, and frequently collaborates with faculty soloists, other campus ensembles, and visiting artists.

By participating in String Chamber Orchestra, you may have the opportunity to run the ensemble as an orchestra officer responsible for publicity, fundraising, social events, and logistics.

To Participate

If you’re interested in participating in the Chamber Orchestra and haven’t before, a friendly, informal audition is required, during which time you are required to perform a two- to four-minute solo piece that represents your highest level of playing, in the scale of your choice.

If you need an instrument for auditions, please contact Professor Simon Tillier. An instrument will be provided for the audition and then permanently checked-out to you if admitted to the ensemble. You can store your instrument in the music discipline area, in a student locker, or, for larger instruments, in the dedicated string instrument room.
