Want to stand out from the crowd? Become a well-rounded scholar and citizen by taking advantage of activities that expand your mind, sharpen your skills, and open new worlds beyond the realm of coursework.
Honors
If you’re pursuing a competitive career track, Honors confers distinction and demonstrates that you’re curious, motivated, and dedicated. While the program requires completion of several courses, there’s plenty of room to make it your own. Typically, students apply for admission to the Honors program in the spring of their first year at UMN Morris and begin the program in the fall of their second. Recipients of the Prairie Scholarship are offered automatic admission to the program in their first year of study.
Internships
As a student at UMN Morris, you can gain real-world experience in your field of interest before you graduate through a variety of internship and field experience opportunities. Internships and field experiences allow you to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings. They provide valuable field experience, enhance your academic work, and help you clarify your career goals.
Study Abroad
Experiential learning is at the heart of our academic programs. We believe in going beyond the classroom to learn more about your area of interest—sometimes far beyond the classroom. Nothing beats exploring the world and experiencing a new place for broadening your education and perspective.
National Student Exchange
National Student Exchange (NSE) allows students to enhance their Morris education by “studying abroad domestically.” Through NSE, students have the chance to attend another university in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands for a semester or academic year.
Undergraduate Research
Research is a matchless way to enhance knowledge and skills in a variety of fields. Whether conducted through experimentation or observation, research takes you to a new level of understanding. Research can be done in a variety of fields—from science and math to social science and the humanities. By taking part in a research project, you’ll systematically investigate a subject of interest, interpret data, and share the findings. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides University of Minnesota undergraduates from every college, major, and discipline the opportunity to partner with a faculty member on research or creative projects.
Creative Activity
Creative activity is a scholarly method for investigating human expression. Of particular interest at UMN Morris are creative activities that communicate to a wide audience and stimulate the mind and emotions. They are often the research method of choice for students in the fine arts, music, theatre, and dance. These opportunities expand your knowledge through scholarly creative activity that will help you prepare for graduate school, gain hands-on experience for your future career, earn money, network with others who share your interests, or travel. To engage in a creative activity, simply talk to your professor, your academic adviser, or the on-campus Academic Center for Enrichment about your research goals and what opportunities are available. Together, you’ll make a plan and get started.
McNair Program
The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement program is one of a suite of federal TRiO programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Its purpose is "to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities." If accepted into the McNair program, you will participate in a specially focused, carefully developed plan to help you succeed academically as an undergraduate and prepare for your path to the PhD/EdD.
Morris Academic eXperiences
The Morris Academic eXperiences (MAX) is a scholarship to support educational opportunities for students who wish to enhance their UMM academic career through activities including, but not limited to, internships, study abroad, community-engaged learning (formerly known as service learning), and undergraduate research.
