Completion Requirement
The mathematics discipline at UMN Morris offers a bachelor of arts (BA) degree in mathematics and the industrial and systems engineering department at UMN Twin Cities offers a master of science (MS) degree in industrial and systems engineering (ISyE). The integrated BA math/MS ISyE (IE track) program gives you the opportunity to earn both a BA in mathematics and an MS in ISyE in just five years, emphasizing education in mathematics and preparing you to pursue a career in industrial engineering. It offers several benefits, like streamlined admission from the undergraduate program to the graduate program and the flexibility to concurrently enroll in undergraduate-level and graduate-level courses during your senior year (at least 8 graduate level credits can be transferred to the graduate program). As a student in the BA mathematics/MS ISyE integrated degree program, you would be eligible for teaching and research assistants in the same manner as other MS in ISyE students.
The IE track allows for three plan options:
- MS Plan A (20 course credits and a thesis, plus 10 thesis credits)
- MS Plan B (30 course credits and a Plan B project)
- MS Plan C (32 course credits)
Note that the GRE is not required for admission to the MS in ISyE program. The BA math/MS ISyE (IE track) degrees must be completed in their entirety, with no courses shared between them. The graduate degree cannot be earned before the undergraduate requirements are satisfied.
Application is open to math undergraduates at UMN Morris who
- have 90 credits completed or in progress;
- have the ability to complete at least 8 graduate level credits during their senior year in addition to their remaining bachelor’s degree requirements;
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.4, or a strong letter of recommendation from a mathematics, statistics, or computer science faculty member; and
- have completed the following prerequisite courses by the end of the spring semester of their junior year (must achieve a minimum grade of B in each of these courses, or submit a strong letter of recommendation from a mathematics, statistics, or computer science faculty member):
- MATH 3111. Linear Algebra
- MATH 2401W. Differential Equations
- MATH 2101. Multivariate Calculus
- MATH 1101. Calculus I and Math 1102. Calculus II.

Undergraduate Degree Progress
The math faculty at UMN Morris for the BA math/MS ISyE integrated degree program (IDP) will advise all IDP students on degree planning during their undergraduate education. The math discipline requires that all undergraduates (including IDP students) meet once per semester with an undergraduate adviser for course planning and review of degree requirements. During these advising sessions, the undergraduate adviser will review the student’s academic progress and make any necessary adjustments.
As an IDP student, you are encouraged to meet with the ISyE graduate program coordinator if they have questions about the MS in ISyE (IE track) degree program or any other questions specific to the MS in ISyE.
IDP students must complete at least 8 graduate level credits during their senior year. These 8 graduate level credits or more may include any of the required graduate level courses in the IE track program and are offered through UNITE, an educational unit within the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Minnesota through which students may enroll in CSE courses if they are unable to attend on-campus courses. At the first week of each semester, all IDP undergraduates must notify the undergraduate adviser which courses they would like applied to the MS in ISyE degree.
New high school students (NHS) admitted to the IE track program may complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within four years and new advanced standing (NAS) students may complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within three years, upon meeting the requirements for their undergraduate degree. Admission to the IDP will be revoked if the awarding of this bachelor’s degree exceeds 8 semesters for NHS students and 6 semesters for NAS students.
The BA degree must be awarded before beginning the MS in ISyE career. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees cannot be awarded simultaneously.
