David C. Johnson Independence Hall, also known as Indy Hall, houses approximately 225 first year students in three wings: A, B, and C. A and C wings have four floors, and B wing has three.
Mixed Gender Floors
Most floors are mixed gender, with same genders roomed together. These floors have two multi-stall bathrooms (one male and one female).
Gender-Inclusive Floors
Indy 2B and 2C are gender-inclusive floors for students who opt into living in these spaces. These floors have two lockable, multi-stall bathrooms.
Room Types
Two room shapes are available in Indy Hall: traditional rectangle rooms and u-shaped rooms with a built-in closet dividing the room. All room shapes are roughly the same size and are randomly assigned to residents.
Kitchens, Lounges, and Laundry
Each floor has its own kitchen area and a lounge, fronted by a balcony. Each kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, oven, and sink. The small lounges on each floor provide an intimate gathering and studying spot for floormates. Each lounge is air conditioned for student comfort.
Indy also has a large main lounge area with a TV, darts, foosball, a ping pong table, and a pool table. This main lounge is also air conditioned.
Attached to the main lounge is the laundry room, complete with six washers and eight dryers. Laundry facilities are available 24/7 and free to use for students.
Community Advisors
There is a Community Advisor (CA), a returning Morris student employed by the Office of Residential Life, on each floor. The CA staff is supervised by student Hall Directors and a full-time Area Coordinator. These Office of Residential Life staff members are available to plan activities, answer any questions, and help ease the transition into residential life.
Each residence hall has at least one general lounge/room space that is dedicated for meditation, prayer, quiet study, smudging, or other practice. The larger halls have one room per floor designated for these purposes. The rooms are open for any student to use and are equipped with smudging materials, white noise machines, seasonal affective disorder lamps, pillows/mat, desk and floor lamp.
Each bedroom is furnished with:
- two beds
- two desks and chairs
- two large closets
- two large dressers
- two small dressers
- box fan
You must provide your own:
- linen (mattresses measure 36 x 80” requiring extra-long sheets)
- blankets
- pillows
- towels
The laundry room contains six washers and six dryers. Campus laundry rooms use water-saving and energy-saving high-efficiency washers. Please follow all directions—including the use of HE detergent.
David C. Johnson Independence Hall Facts
David C. Johnson Independence Hall is configured into three four-story units or “pavilions” that are set at right angles to one another. The pavilions share joint stairwell towers that both separate the pavilions at each floor level and allow interconnection between them. Each floor of each pavilion is divided into five or seven double rooms, separated by a central lounge.
