Background on Sculpture: Comprised of a multitude of bronze rings and bands, this stationary sculpture evokes both the frenetic movement and the coalescent quality of atoms, that molecular building block. The 83" sculpture was given to UMN Morris by Paul and Ann Gremmels in memory of Paul's father, Professor of English Jim Gremmels, and his wife Ruth. According to Paul, the sculpture used to sit on the front lawn of the family home; it was said that Jim "traded an old canoe" to the artist in return for the sculpture.
The question is, who was the artist? It's believed that the work was created by a UMN Morris student in 1972 (a photo dates the work to that year, and includes the artist). Please contact Jeff Lamberty in the Development Office if you have a clue!
