Student Counseling

Student Counseling is a free, confidential, on-campus mental health service. We provide assessment, mental health counseling, brief psychotherapy, and referrals for UMN Morris students on a voluntary basis. Student Counseling supports students’ self-awareness, skill building, mental health and well-being to foster success in meeting their academic goals and in life.

Our purpose is to support students’ personal development, help students cope with challenges associated with painful life events, and assist students in developing resiliency so they are better able to respond to problems and concerns. We are here to help in ways that further students’ growth and make their experiences as UMN Morris students more productive and successful.

Student Counseling focuses on the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, physical, occupational, and social development of students. Our services are preventative and educational in nature and come from a developmental perspective. Students in crisis and those with chronic mental illnesses are served in the capacity deemed appropriate. Ongoing consultation to students and faculty concerned about another person is also provided.

Services not Provided by Student Counseling

Student Counseling strives to provide as much support for students’ mental health care as possible. However, we are not able to provide some specialized services, resource-intensive programs, services beyond the scope of Student Counseling mission, or those which pose a conflict of interest. As such, we do not provide:

  • Clinical services for students studying away from the campus including international or domestic exchange. We do not serve incoming first-year students prior to Orientation, students who have graduated, or alumni
  • Clinical services to staff or faculty
  • Long-term counseling
  • Specialty care such as EMDR, psychoanalysis, bodywork, etc.
  • Intensive substance abuse treatment
  • Intensive outpatient treatment
  • Testing for learning disabilities or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Assessment and documentation for service or emotional support animals
  • Forensic evaluations
  • Neuropsychological evaluations
  • Court ordered treatment, treatment that is the stipulation of probation and mandated treatment
  • Evaluations for attorneys or courts related to difficulties such as alcohol infractions (e.g., driving under the influence) or other domestic matters such as parents seeking custodial authority of a student
  • Services to students who are not medically stable or require intensive medical treatment
  • Mediation for on-campus proceedings

Although we do not provide these services, we will assist students in accessing these resources off-campus. If you would like assistance in finding an on-campus resource to meet your needs, please contact Student Counseling and schedule an appointment with one of our counselors.

Outreach

Outreach is about caring for college student mental health needs through prevention, awareness, education and stigma reduction. Through outreach, SCS are connected with the larger UMN community and ultimately strengthen our community.

We aim to connect with students who do not traditionally utilize individual or group therapy. These could include students who may want to know more about how to help a friend or students who may experience stigma about help seeking or students who may need support, but not necessarily counseling. SCS partners with our campus leaders such as staff and faculty involvement to offer a variety of education and prevention events.

Consultation

Student Counseling Staff is available to provide consultation to the university community. If faculty or staff are concerned about a student, you can call us at 320-589-6060 and ask to speak with a counselor or staff member.
