YONSEI UNIVERSITY – SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

Location and Academics

Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea offers a year-long or single semester program with all courses offered in English for undergraduates. Those students fluent in Korean may enroll in courses offered by Yonsei University and will be subject to usual university regulations and policies. Proof of language proficiency is required.

Students choose from any courses taught in English for undergraduates and typically enroll in 24–30 credits per year or 12–15 credits per semester. At least one course must be a Korean language course unless you are already fluent when the exchange begins.

How does the exchange work?

Under the terms of the exchange, student pays UMM tuition and fees which will cover equivalent costs at Yonsei University. Students are expected to pay housing through the host university as well as meals and books. Students are also responsible for costs associated with international health insurance, personal expenses, and any other applicable expenses.

Eligibility Requirements:

The program is open to any student regardless of major who has completed at least one year at his or her home university prior to the exchange period. Typically study in Korea is done in the sophomore or junior year. Previous study of Korean is encouraged but not required. Students are expected to have a solid academic average (at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and a clear statement of purpose for studying in Korea. Applications are due to the University of Minnesota Morris’ Academic Center for Enrichment on March 15 for fall semester or full academic year exchange or October 1 for spring semester exchange.

Application Procedures:

Students hoping to attend Yonsei University for a semester or year, complete a print application (available in the Academic Center for Enrichment) or the on-line application which applicants will need to print and submit to the Academic Center for Enrichment. All application materials including checklist items are due on the University of Minnesota Morris application deadline to the Academic Center for Enrichment. Application fees are waived for students applying as exchange students through the University of Minnesota Morris.

Students complete the University application and submit this to the Academic Center for Enrichment at the University of Minnesota Morris. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials are complete (including supplementary applications for housing, Korean Language Institute, and any other applicable applications). The study abroad exchange nomination committee will review applications and may set up a time to interview applicants prior to nominating students for exchange. All nominations will be sent to the Office of International Affairs at Yonsei University who will make final admission decisions.

If you apply directly to the host university your application will not be considered for the exchange and agreement rates will not apply. To participate in the exchange students must submit their applications to the University of Minnesota Morris for review and nomination before their application will move forward to the host university.

Students interested in applying for the exchange should contact the study abroad adviser ahead of time to provide notification of their intention to apply. The study abroad adviser will run an academic and disciplinary record check for University of Minnesota students applying for the exchange; students from outside of the University of Minnesota who hope to apply for the exchange must provide a written recommendation from their study abroad advising office which must comment on the student’s academic and student conduct code record.
