David C. Johnson Fund for International Service Learning

Given the specific nature of this scholarship, recipients must meet with both the Study Abroad Advisor and the Coordinator of the Office of Community Engagement to discuss the student’s plan and review best practices of service-learning.

  • In the fall or spring semester following their award, recipients are required to give a public presentation on the international service-learning work done with the scholarship. This is a specific event for scholarship recipients and former UMM Chancellor David Johnson generally attends.
  • It is highly encouraged that applicants complete a reflection activity. This will enrich their experience and provide a record that will help in developing the presentation component.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Open to UMM students only.
  • Students must be enrolled full-time at the time of application and during the term of travel. Students will be enrolled in a 0 credit (S/N) course until they complete their required presentation. Awards may be used in winter break, spring semester or May term of the current academic year, summer term or fall semester of the following academic year.
  • Students of underrepresented populations are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Preference will be given to service learning to be carried out in an under-developed or developing country.
  • Students must be in good academic standing at the time of application and during the study abroad program.
  • Recipients must be available to give a public presentation on the service learning work they complete. The presentation will be in the fall or spring semester following their award.
