Irish Texts and Contexts (IS 3053)
Location: Ireland (Dublin, Galway, and the West)
Term: Summer 2026
Irish Texts and Contexts is an interdisciplinary study abroad course that explores the rich relationship between Irish literature and the physical environments that shaped it. Through literature, archaeology, and art history, students will examine how Irish writers across centuries were influenced by their surrounding landscapes—from mythic prehistoric sites to medieval monastic ruins and colonial estates.
Led by Professors Eckerle and Schryver, who bring extensive teaching and research experience in Irish literary and archaeological studies, the course offers immersive learning in Ireland’s most culturally and historically significant regions. Students will travel to Dublin, Galway, and the West of Ireland (including Counties Clare, Mayo, Sligo, and Roscommon), with day trips and site visits integrated into the curriculum.
Course readings include foundational texts like The Táin, and class sessions will incorporate on-site lectures and guest speakers. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary inquiry, sustainability, and place-based learning—making it especially relevant to UMN Morris students interested in literature, history, art, and environmental studies. Previously offered in 2014, 2016, and 2018, this course has proven to be a highly engaging and enriching academic travel experience.
