What does it really mean to be a hero? The University of Minnesota Morris Performing Arts Series invites the community to find out on Saturday, October 24, with Be Your Own Superhero, an electrifying performance that brings together dance, music, theater and storytelling in a celebration of courage, kindness and community.
Created by acclaimed Minneapolis-based dance collective SHAPESHIFT, Be Your Own Superhero follows eight friends as they navigate the challenges of growing up in a vibrant community. Along the way, they discover that being a hero isn't about having superpowers. It's about choosing kindness, working hard, caring for others and finding ways to make a positive difference in the world.
Audiences of all ages will be swept up in a high-energy mix of hip-hop, contemporary dance, ballet and theatrical movement, paired with popular and old-school music, dialogue and creative staging. The result is an uplifting, energetic performance that celebrates resilience, compassion and the power we all have to make a difference.
Known for its exceptional artistry and dynamic performances, SHAPESHIFT has captivated audiences across the country, including appearances with Jennifer Lopez and Justin Timberlake during Super Bowl LII, at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and in collaborations with Prince's 3rdEyeGirl.
With its infectious energy, athletic choreography and heartfelt message, Be Your Own Superhero offers an inspiring reminder that heroism can be found in everyday choices.
And here’s even more reason for the community to join us: the performance is free and open to the public, thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor.
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Edson Auditorium in the Edward J. and Helen Jane Morrison Performing Arts Center in the UMN Morris Student Center. Free parking is available in any of the UMN Morris lots.
Chancellor Michael C. Rodriguez will host a reception before the performance, providing an opportunity for community members to gather and connect before enjoying the show.
Come discover your inner superhero—and celebrate the everyday acts of courage and kindness that can make a difference.
