Alumni Spotlight: Cole Flohr ‘06

While a student at the University of Minnesota Morris, Cole Flohr ‘06 experienced a strong sense of belonging and an “exceptional” education.

“Morris is a tight knit, personal community,” says Flohr. “Professors have time to get to know their students and are genuinely invested in their success.”

A computer science and biology double-major, Flohr recalls the one-on-one support she received from professors and administrators. “[That] allowed me to find a path to complete two majors that aren't typically combined, in four years.”

Flohr went on to earn her master’s degree in software engineering with a focus on bioengineering and is currently a manager and lead software engineer at a medical device research and development company.

“The liberal arts program [at UMN Morris] challenged me with classes outside my major that have been very helpful in my career as an engineer.”

Flohr credits the core skills she gained from taking other classes, like economics, writing, art and design, and foreign languages, for helping her advance more quickly in her career. She adds that she had plenty of opportunities during her time at UMN Morris to try different things. She says this allowed her to develop both the skills she needed to get a job and the interests that make life enjoyable.

Flohr was welcomed back to campus this past spring semester when she gave the visiting science and math alumni lecture about her education and career path from Morris.
