Rural Intercultural Education Initiative

These positions support our ongoing partnership with the Latino community.  See each position for pay. 


Community ESL Lead Teacher

When: Spring 2026
Eligibility: Any student is eligible 
Location: Imholte Hall 

Job Description: We will train and provide support for students who wish to teach English to new immigrants! Lead teachers plan and implement English lessons for immigrants on Monday and Thursday evenings. Initial training and monthly professional development sessions are required. 

Pay: Stipend of $500/semester if not federal work study eligible; federal work study eligible students can be paid $16/hour. 


Puentes al Futuro Student Leader

When: 2025-2026 academic year
Eligibility: Any student is eligible; competency in Spanish, Chukkese, or another language spoken in rural MN a plus
Location: Morris

Job Description: How did you navigate getting into college? Everyone has a different story. This program is geared toward assisting first generation and immigrant Americans and their parents in understanding the higher education system in the U.S. Students will assist with presentations in the fall semester and mentoring students and families through the process, with support from UMN staff. 

Pay: $16/hour



Center for Small Towns Projects

These project-based work experiences meet identified needs in a community and often include faculty advisors. Interns meet weekly for a project meeting and attend biweekly professional development and reflection sessions. 


Land Stewardship Project’s Food System Impacts 

When: 2025-2026
Eligibility:  Federal Work Study eligible only
Location: Communities in Stevens County

Job Description: Talk to your neighbors! This student will be trained to knock on doors and/or call people in Stevens County to learn about the county’s diversification and changing demographics and how this is impacting farms and food systems. By recording responses, the organization hopes to learn more about the viewpoints in our county. 


West Central Food Systems Council


When: Spring 2026
Eligibility:  Any student is eligible
Location: Virtual

Job Description: Assist with the West Central Food Systems Council’s work in improving regional food systems, including data entry and analysis, leading and taking notes at community meetings, and creating outreach materials for events.




 

Students in Service

These entry level positions provide students with opportunities to engage with the community as paid volunteers. These positions are available only to Federal Work Study (FWS) eligible students, with some possibilities for those who are not FWS eligible when funding allows. They pay $15.25/hour, and the number of hours depends on the student’s FWS eligibility.


Hancock Clothing Bank

When: Fall 2026
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Hancock, MN

Assist with sorting and organizing donations. Must have transportation to and from Hancock. Hours are flexible.


Morris Area Childcare Center

When: Ongoing/any semester
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Morris, MN

Provide childcare for infants through preschool aged youth. A variety of shifts are available throughout the day. 


Pomme De Terre Foods

When: Ongoing/any semester 
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Morris, MN

Support a non-profit grocery store focusing on local, natural and bulk foods by serving as on site staff during business hours.


Someplace Safe Thrift Store

When: Ongoing/any semester
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Morris, MN

Support the Someplace Safe organization through its retail store by putting out priced donations, sorting clothing, working with the register, etc. 


U.S. Fish and Wildlife

When: Ongoing/any semester
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Morris Wetlands

Assist with outdoor field work and data entry and analysis for the Morris Wetlands, a site of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Students must have their own transportation to and from the wetlands, as the Morris Transit cannot take people there.


Zone After School Program

When: 2025-2026 academic year
Eligibility: Federal Work Study only
Location: Morris Area Elementary School     
Note: Up to 20 students could be hired!

From 3:00-5:00 each day at Morris Area Elementary, UMN Morris students support the Zone program by providing homework help and guidance during free time. Students must be able to work at least two days/week at this time frame. A training and criminal background check are required for this position. 




 

Tutoring, Reading, and Empowering Children

The TREC Program works with youth toward academic preparation, engagement, and success. TREC tutors complete training early in fall semester and attend monthly professional development sessions on campus in addition to their time in person at an educational site. A criminal background check is required for these positions. Site descriptions are below. Lead tutors are paid $16/hour, and assistant tutors are paid $15.25/hour. 


TREC for Educational Events

2025-2026 academic year 
Location: Varies
Eligibility: All students are eligible
Dates and times: Students in this TREC program are on call to provide TREC activities to youth for public events. Students commit to certain times they are available each week, including evenings, and are contacted when an event requiring TREC is happening.
Description: Plan engaging activities for youth while their caretakers are involved in an educational  event.


TREC: ABE

2025-2026 academic year
Location: Morris Area Elementary School
Eligibility: One remaining position; Federal Work Study only
Dates and times: Wednesdays, 5:30-7:30, plus prep time
Description: Plan engaging activities for youth while their caretakers are taking adult basic education classes.


TREC: ESL

2025-2026 academic year
Location: Federated Church in Morris
Dates and Times: Wednesdays 1-3 p.m., plus prep time
Eligibility: At this time, federal work study eligible only
Description: Plan engaging activities for youth in a pre-K while their caretakers are engaged in a support group.


TREC: Storytime at the Library

2025-2026 academic year
Location: Morris Public Library
Dates and Times: Thursdays, 10-12 p.m., plus prep time
Eligibility: At this time, federal work study eligible only
Description: Select children’s books in a theme for pre-K youth, read the books to youth in an interactive way, and plan follow up learning activities related to the theme. Youth come with daycare providers or caretakers.


TREC: Tiger Targets

2025-2026 academic year
Location: Morris Area Elementary School
Dates and times: M-F, 3:00-5:00
Eligibility: At this time, federal work study eligible only
Description: From Monday-Friday, assist youth in grades K-6 who are struggling in school in a classroom led by a licensed teacher. On Fridays, youth come to Morris to participate in activities on campus.
