Advising: What to Expect

Students, Parents, and Advisers Working Together

Students, parents, and advisers play a unique and vital role in student success at college. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines limit what advisers can reveal about their advisee. It is best for the student to have open communication with both their parent(s) and adviser.

Roles

Students are responsible for:

  • learning and academic success
  • monitoring academic progress
  • understanding degree requirements and University policies
  • attending all classes
  • managing study, work, and social time
  • utilizing University resources to aid in success at Morris
  • practicing good communication skills with parent(s)
  • working with adviser to explore educational opportunities

Parents are responsible for: 

  • supporting and encouraging the student
  • offering appropriate advice
  • encouraging the student to ask for help if needed
  • encouraging independence in a safe environment
  • allowing the student to make their own decisions
  • talking about expectations for blending family values and experiences with transition to college life
  • understanding that the transition to college is a challenge for parents and students

Advisers are responsible for:

  • monitoring student progress and guiding them toward academic success
  • helping the student understand their responsibilities and supporting them
  • providing assistance and referring the student to campus resources
  • advocating for the student
  • helping the student clarify and develop an educational plan that meets their personal and career goals
