Pi Delta Phi is the French National Honor Society for undergraduate and graduate students at accredited public and private colleges and universities in the United States. The advantages of lifetime membership are many - apply as soon as you are eligible so you can also apply for one of their scholarships to study abroad.
National eligibility requirements:
- completion of at least one course of upper-division French (i.e. beyond the intermediate-level series of courses)
- 3.0 GPA in French, 3.0 GPA overall and rank in the top 35% of their class
- sophomore standing (i.e. students have attended at least one year of college and are in at least their second year of university study)
- degree-seeking status at the host institution
Students who meet the above criteria are encouraged to join Pi Delta Phi. You pay lifetime dues of $30 and receive a certificate, a Society pin, and a blue, white, and red honor cord - a gift from us - to wear with your robe at graduation. The earlier you join, the better, since membership enables you to apply for a scholarship to study abroad.
Kappa Xi (the Morris Chapter)
Since its founding in 1990, Kappa Xi, the UMM chapter of Pi Delta Phi, has welcomed more than eighty members.
Scholarships
Pi Delta Phi is proud to offer several undergraduate scholarships for summer study abroad that recognize superior achievement in the study of the French language. The annual awards are designed to enable undergraduate regular members of an active chapter to continue their studies of the French language and the literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world. Award recipients are expected to take courses conducted in French and for credit.
The Society
The oldest academic honor society for a modern foreign language in the U.S., Pi Delta Phi was founded as a departmental honor society at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906. There are currently more than 370 chapters of the Society in the United States and two representative chapters at the American Universities in Paris and Aix-en-Provence in France. The society was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967.
